Asbestos in Soil

EAPL is an independent environmental consultancy specialising in remediation and management of Asbestos Impacted Soils and deliver impartial, trusted advice and professional services to our clients both national and international.

Asbestos in soil is a risk to health because fibres can become airborne and may be inhaled. The risk is increased depending on the type, condition and amount of asbestos material in the soil structure; especially if there is potential for it to be disturbed and fibres to become airborne. Of greatest concern are bonded materials that weather overtime and become friable.

Specific legal requirements prohibit anyone supplying, storing, transporting, selling, using and re-using Asbestos Impacted Soil containing asbestos.

Asbestos in Soil

Depending upon site conditions and other considerations the following is the general response when dealing with Asbestos Impacted Soil:

  • Earthworks uncover suspected ACM
  • Isolate Area
  • Class A Asbestos Assessor evaluates type and condition of asbestos, the extent of contamination and formulates safe remediation methodology
  • Licensing requirements determined by Class A Asbestos Assessor
  • Licensed contractor (Class A or Class B) employed to attend site
  • Class A Asbestos Assessor conducts Air Monitoring & Clearance Certification
  • Works completed out of hours
  • No other site works or activity in removal area until Class A Asbestos Assessor issues Clearance Certificate

How we can help?

EAPL can assess the nature, extent and scale of asbestos contamination by site investigation, air monitoring, and quantitative asbestos analysis through our NATA accredited services and assessments of risk.

Airborne Asbestos Monitoring

EAPL holds full NATA ISO 17025 accreditation for the undertaking and analysis of airborne respirable fibres on membrane filters in workplaces or ambient air.

Samples are analysed on site in a specifically established NATA accredited Field Laboratories or submitted for certified analysis to our main NATA accredited testing facility.

Asbestos air monitoring is not usually required unless friable ACM contaminated soil is being removed/remediated or where risk assessment indicates that airborne asbestos fibres may result from the removal activity.
