Understanding Asbestos Hazards

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral that was once popular in construction because of its heat resistance and durability.

The fibre has now been identified as a potent carcinogen, which can lead to lung diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma if inhaled.

Although phased out in the 1980s, asbestos can still be found in buildings built between the 1920s and 1990s (Australia was one of the highest users of asbestos per capita). Asbestos is detected in over 3000 applications, for example: insulation, flooring, roofing, and textured paints.

If you suspect a building contains asbestos, it’s important to organise NATA-accredited inspection services to confirm its presence so you can manage the associated risks. EAPL provides professional asbestos sampling and analysis in NATA accredited laboratories.

Why Test for Asbestos?

  • Protecting Your Family

Was your home built before the 1980s? It may contain asbestos. If you’re suspicious about asbestos in your home, it’s best to get the material tested to ensure the health and safety of your family. As well as the asbestos testing, EAPL can offer optional sampling kits for safe sampling if required.

  • Safe Renovations

If you’re an avid renovator in Australia, you’ll know asbestos can be an issue during the rebuild. Testing before you conduct renovations or repairs prevents the release of asbestos fibres into the air. We offer asbestos identification to confirm the nature of your building product and allow your project to move forward.

  • Occupational Hygiene

As a PCBU, you have a responsibility to keep your employees and contractors safe at work and in their associated environments. Manage WHS risks by proactively testing for asbestos. We can come to your site to manage removalists, survey for suspected building materials and analyse any samples taken during the survey.
